March 10, 2019 Meeting

Voices in Time: Stories of the Banker’s House.
The house on North Lafayette Street was built in 1874-75 and only executives of the bank that later became First National ever lived there. Joe will give a narrative history of the house and about the people that have lived there; their lineage, how they helped shape Shelby and Cleveland County . His book is packed full of fascinating stories of these people and events and photographs by Hal Bryant.

Joe is a Shelby native, a graduate of Shelby High, Gardner-Webb College and the UNC School of Journalism in Chapel Hill. He’s a U.S. Army veteran with service in Vietnam. For more than 20 years, he was a reporter at The Shelby Star and later The Charlotte Observer, where he retired in 2015 after 25 years with the paper. He focused whenever possible on writing about local history and the environment. He’s married to the former Jan Crawley of Boiling Springs and they live in Cramerton.
